Baking soda is also known as sodium bicarbonate, which is used for various purposes including baked goods. Baking soda is used for day to day activities and has multiple applications. It not only cleans the house but also has a lot of health benefits. In this article, we are going to discuss some fruitful health benefits of using Baking Soda.
Here are few ways to use baking soda for your health
You can include baking soda in daily requirements.
- Teeth whitener –
For naturally whitening your teeth, take a half teaspoon of baking soda and mix it with one crushed ripe strawberry. Apply the mixture on your teeth and leave on for 5 minutes. Then brush your teeth and rinse. You should not use this method more than once a week, as it can cause damage to your tooth enamel.
- Boost sports performance –
Many runners have been performing a practice known as “soda doping”. The player takes a baking soda capsule before the start of their races to boost performance. It’s also been found that it improves the speed of swimmers too. But as per my views, I would suggest not to try this at home.
The reason is- Baking soda consists of sodium bicarbonate which is an alkali substance that increases the pH level of the blood which directly lowers the acidity level produced in the muscles during a workout, anaerobic exercise such as running or swimming produces lactic acid instantly.
- Insect bites and poison ivy –
To help relieve itching sensation, apply a paste made of baking soda and water to insect bites area. It is also beneficial for itchy rashes and poisonous ivy. Baking soda neutralizes toxins and irritants present on the affected area, and soothe the irritation and itching by on your skin’s surface. You can also rub the dry powder on your skin.
- Heartburn, indigestion, and ulcer pain –
Antacids medicine contains a type of bicarbonate. Baking soda works by rapidly neutralizing the stomach acid, soothes heartburn, proper digestion and reduces ulcer pain.
Take a half teaspoon of baking soda and mix it with a half a glass of water, take it for every two hours
Note- Do not to consume excessive amounts. It should not be more than 7 teaspoons and not more than three teaspoons for elderly people.
It might cause imbalances acid/base and some harmful electrolytes in our body.
- Natural Deodorant –
Generally, deodorant found in market place contains parabens and aluminum. If you want to avoid this, take a pinch of baking soda mixed with water. Apply this paste on your arms, and you can see an effective and simple natural deodorant. You can also simply brush some dry baking soda under your arms.
- Sunburn remedy –
For natural and satisfactory relief, add a half cup of baking soda to lukewarm water, and then soak in the tub. After you come out of the tub, let your skin air dry, instead of using a towel for drying your skin, else it will remove baking soda, which might provide you some extra relief.
You can directly apply the mixture of baking soda and water on the sunburn area; it acts as a cool compressor.
- Used for the foot soak and exfoliate –
Fill a tub with warm water and add three tablespoons of baking soda for an energizing foot soak. For additional exfoliation, you can add baking soda paste to scrub your feet.
For face- Take 3 teaspoon of baking soda mix it with one teaspoon water and apply it on your face or body as an exfoliator. It’s natural, not costly and good enough to use every day.
- Relaxing Soak –
For a relaxing spa-like bath, a mixture of baking soda and apple cider are famously used. Plus it also cleans the tub and the drain.
- Hand cleanser –
Mix baking soda and water with a proportion of 3:1. It will act as a natural hand cleanser which will remove dirt away, harmful bacteria’s and neutralize odors.
- Splinter removal –
Add a tablespoon of baking soda to a small glass of water. Now soak the affected area for at least twice a day. Within a couple of days, due to this treatment, splinters will come out on their own.
- Tooth and gum paste –
It has been found that baking soda helps in removing plaque and cleans your teeth. One study found that toothpaste which contains baking soda removes off plaque formation more quickly than brushing with non-baking soda toothpaste.
Baking soda also has an antibacterial property which kills bacteria and automatically reduces the risk of having tooth decay. For an amazingly appropriate tooth and gum paste, mix baking soda and sea salt with a proportion of 6:1.
Blend it for about 30 seconds, and then place it in a container. With the help of the wet tip of your index finger and apply a small amount of this mixture on your gums.
Apply it on inside and outside of gums, followed by upside and downside of the gum. Now, spit out the excess. Let it be as it is for 15 minutes and then rinse your mouth.
Note- Baking soda can produce a harmful effect on your enamel and might cause other impacts on your body.
