Brain Tumor – Treatment

Cancer can occur in any part of the brain. A few brain tumors such as meningeal and pituitary gland tumors might develop few or no symptoms at all. A neurologist or neurosurgeon will diagnosis brain tumors in a patient with the help of CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and other tests like a spinal tap, angiogram, and biopsy. Your diagnosis will let the doctors know that at what stage of brain tumor you are suffering from. The location and size of the tumor will also be determined after these tests. The treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy (or a combination of treatments). The choice of treatment depends on the patients.

The treatment plan differs for every patient and it widely depends on the tumor type, size, location, patient age, and the patient’s present and previous health status.

Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are the major treatment categories for most brain cancers.

1) Surgical Therapy

In this, the tumor affected area is removed by cutting the tumor away from brain tissue. This type of surgery will open the skull.  Some types of brain tumors cannot be operable by surgeons because as this attempt to remove the tumor cells might lead to brain damage or death. But, sometimes it might be operated by another surgeon, so never lose your hope and try to find one. If still, this tumor is inoperable then the patient should seek a second option.

2) Chemotherapy

In this type of surgery, the doctors try to destroy tumor cells using chemicals or drugs. There are many types of drugs used for targeting brain cancer which varies and depends on the type and size of the tumor. Plus patient’s medical history is also checked so that it doesn’t cause any adverse effect.

3) Radiation Therapy

In this therapy, the doctor will try to destroy the tumor cells by using high-energy radiation which focused on the tumor which will help in destroying the tumor cells’ ability to multiply and spread. It is a nonsurgical procedure, in which highly focused gamma-ray or X-ray beams at a single high dose on the accurate location is targeted. Equipment used in radiosurgery is a gamma knife that uses small focused gamma rays, and a linear accelerator that uses photons, whereas extremely charged-particle radiosurgery uses a proton beam. Tomotherapy is also used which is a type of radiotherapy that minimizes radiation exposure to healthy tissue.

Other treatment options might include hyperthermia (heat treatments), immunotherapy (in which our own immune cells will try to kill tumor cells), or steroids to soothe pain and brain swelling.
