Licorice root, also known as the sweet root, is used as a sweetener in candies and drinks. Licorice root is being used for centuries due to its medicinal benefits.

Licorice is found in many forms, it contains either glycyrrhizin or as deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL).

How to use licorice root?

  1. Powder

Licorice powder is easily found in stores or online.  Licorice added with a gel base can help in clearing the skin. And licorice powder is specifically helpful in treating eczema and acne.

Licorice supplements and chewable tablets

You can also sprinkle the powder into vegetable capsules and take it orally.

As per World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, the recommended licorice root dosage should be not more than 75 milligrams per day.

  1. Liquid extract

Licorice extract is the most commonly used as a commercial sweetener in candies and beverages.

Note- Licorice extract consumption should not exceed 30 mg/mL of glycyrrhizic acid. It might cause unwanted side effects.

  1. DGL(deglycyrrhizin)

A safer and good form of licorice is DGL with glycyrrhizin removed. DGL should contain no more than 2% of glycyrrhizin. This form is only recommended for gastrointestinal problems.

It is advised to not take more than 5 grams of DGL per day.

Dried Licorice plant leaves are crushed into a tea; used to promote digestive, respiratory, and adrenal gland health. Usually, herbal teas named as “cleanse and detox” and “bronchial wellness” contains licorice extract.
