Signs And Symptoms Of Mouth Cancer With The Diagnosis Solution

Mouth cancer is also known as oral cancer can come anywhere in the mouth, on the lips, the tongue, inside the cheek, in the gums, in the upper and lower surface of the mouth, in the tonsils, and also in the salivary glands.

Mouth cancer usually occurs after the age of 40, and there is high risk (more than twice) of getting infected in men as compared to women.

Oral cancer comes into the category of head and neck cancer and has similar treatment procedure as of head and neck cancers. Oral cancer can occur as a tumor or lesion anywhere in the mouth.

According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology, approximately 48K Americans were identified to suffer from oral cancer in 2016, and nearly about 10K deaths were envisioned.

Signs and Symptoms of Mouth Cancer


During early stages, generally, there are no signs or symptoms, but people who smoke and alcoholic addicted are advised to have regular checkups with their dentist, as there might be an early sign which you may not find out. If it is treated during starting stages, then you might be healed quickly and have lower chances of getting the critical condition.

Signs and symptoms of mouth cancer include:

  • Painful tongue
  • Jaw pain or stiffness
  • A sore throat
  • Harsh voice
  • Spots on the lining of the mouth or tongue, generally red in color or red with a white mix.
  • Pain in the neck or near ear which does not stop
  • Bad breath
  • Mouth ulcers or canker sores which do not heal
  • Unpredicted loosening of teeth with no evident reason
  • Swelling that keeps going on for more than 3 weeks.
  • Cough due to Enlarged neck lymph nodes.
  • Also due to poorly fitted dentures
  • A bump or thickened lining of the mouth of the skin.
  • A feeling of something is stuck in the throat
  • Pain while swallowing or eating food


If you have any of these symptoms, it does not mean that you are suffering from oral or mouth cancer, but do get a  check up because it might be the starting of something even more painful and unbearable disease. Therefore, go and visit your doctor immediately.

Treatment depends on the location and the stage of cancer you reached, and the patient’s previous health condition and background family history. You might undergo a combination of treatments if necessary.

Diagnosis of mouth ulcer

At first, you will undergo biopsy procedure, by extracting small tissues for medical test for determining presence and degree of the disease.

If mouth cancer is diagnosed, the next job is to determine the stage of cancer.

These tests include:

  • Endoscopy- In this method, a lighted scope is passed down from patient’s throat to check the area affected by cancer.
  • Imaging tests- Such as Computed Tomography (CT) scans, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), X-ray, and the Stage of cancer will conclude the treatment options.
