The Causes of Iron deficiencies in a human body are –

  • Blood loss

As you continue losing your blood, the hemoglobin also reduces which contains iron. Other possible areas of bleeding could be –

1)      Excessive menstrual bleeding – This means excessive blood loss which will cause iron deficiency.

2)      Bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract –Bleeding which occurs from the gastrointestinal tract, it could be due to ulcers, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids, stomach or colon cancer, etc; or you have blood in your urine.

3)      Bleeding due to piles (hemorrhoids).

4)      Bleeding from your bowel is caused by colon cancer.

5)      Laryngological bleeding/nose bleeding–

Bleeding from the respiratory tract or frequent nosebleeds (epistaxes) can lead to iron deficiency.


  • Blood Donation –

Have you ever wanted to donate your blood and the doctor said that your hemoglobin level is below as per requirement. Therefore, you cannot donate blood. The reason behind this is your body doesn’t have sufficient hemoglobin (i.e. oxygen level) in your body system. And if you tried to donate more blood then you might reduce oxygen level and lead to anemia disease.


  • Inadequate intake of iron from the daily diet –

Your body gets iron regularly from the daily foods you eat. If you consume too little iron after sometime your body will become iron deficient.

During pregnancy, for proper growth and development of your baby, and infants and children need iron from their diets, too.

  • Chronic diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease and rheumatoid arthritis cause iron deficiency.


  • Medicines –

Some medicines, drugs, foods in diet might interfere with iron absorption in a body. Especially, if you regularly take anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen; your iron levels decrease.


  • Pregnancy –

Iron deficiency anemia occurs in many pregnant women. During pregnancy, as the baby grows inside the womb, the requirement of iron levels increases too; so the lady has to improve her daily intake food iron levels.  Pregnant women need to make hemoglobin for their own bloodstream as well as to the growing fetus.


  • Malabsorption syndromes –

It is a condition which prevents absorption of nutrients through the small intestine. This might interfere with iron absorption in a body.


  • Skin condition –

If you have a certain skin condition which causes your skin to be shed much more than normal can indicate iron deficiency.


  • Hookworms –

You have worms in your gut can lead to iron deficiency.


  • Athlete –

An endurance athlete might have low iron levels. The reason behind this is a condition called hemolysis occurs due to the destruction of red blood cells from physical impact; thus cause loss of iron levels through sweat, and urine, or blood loss due to gastrointestinal, and haematuria (blood in urine).

But, the amounts of iron excreted by sweat and urine are very less. Out of all these possibilities, research also found that athlete’s bodies get habituated to retain iron better.


People who are at greater risk of having iron deficiency are –

  • Frequent blood donors – People who frequently donate blood might be at greater risk of developing iron deficiency anemia. Since blood donation will lead to depletion in iron stores. If you’re told that you can’t donate blood because of low hemoglobin, ask your doctor about ways to increase your hemoglobin levels.


If your hemoglobin levels are sufficient enough to donate blood, then after donating blood, eat more iron-rich foods.  If you tried to donate more blood then you might reduce oxygen level and lead to anemia disease. The only best solution to avoid anemia is eating more iron-rich foods.

  • Pregnant women – Iron deficiency anemia usually occurs in many pregnant women because of their increased iron requirements for her and her baby. Therefore the pregnant women need to higher the iron-containing foods for avoiding anemia and for better future of her baby. The necessity of volume source of hemoglobin increases for her and for the growing fetus. It is better to take iron supplements during pregnancy and make sure to consult a doctor first.


  • Excess blood loss in Women – Some women who have excess blood loss during menstruation are at greater risk of iron deficiency anemia.


  • Vegetarians – People who don’t eat meat might be at greater risk of iron deficiency anemia if they don’t include iron-rich foods in their diet.


  • Infants and children – Infants, especially those who had less weight just after birth or were born prematurely; these babies don’t get enough iron from breast milk. They need extra iron for healthy growth. If your child isn’t eating a healthy diet, then he/she might get at risk of anemia in future. This might cause delayed growth and development.
